A Brief History
Burnham Autos was started by Paul Burnham in 1981. Paul had studied
at Motorcycle College and had been building bikes for both work and hobby. The company’s inception came
about quite by accident after Paul’s Mark 2 Consul had been pushed into service following a bike accident.
It was a column change vehicle & the only car he could drive in plaster! As is the way the Consul had some
modifications, a 7.5 lt engine replaced the factory’s 1700cc and a Mk2 Jag front suspension set up was
added complete with braking system.
But it was the rear of the car that really made the difference to Paul’s career, as after studying his
contemporaries of the time (Harris Bros etc) and noticing their traction problems at the Drags, Paul
decided to custom build a trick 4 bar set up for the Consul. After some trial and error the perfect system
was found, Paul says it’s all to do with triangles. Burnham Autos first customer tracked Paul down after
seeing the Consul on the road and wanted his car to handle as well. Strangely, this still happens when
people see Paul’s much modified Buick.

Profile
Burnham Autos have been involved with many prestigious TV shows
including BBC2’s Panic Mechanics where Paul memorably beat legendary designer and builder Edd China on the
last corner in a race where 2 hearses had been turned into beach buggies. Paul was a Series Consultant
for Men & Motors with Richard Hammond and Channel 4’s Monster Garage where he was responsible for the
design and set up of the workshop and set. Paul was also responsible for some of the vehicles and appeared
in Episodes 5 and 6: Lord Muck (turning a Rolls Royce into and muck spreader) and Hearse Car Crusher (where
a Daimler hearse was made into a car killing machine). Burnham Autos has also built or modified countless
magazine feature cars, bikes, trikes and pickups in various publications including Custom Car, Backstreet
Heroes, Classic American and American Car World.
Paul Burnham has a fascination for metalwork and all things mechanical. He has surrounded himself with a
team that share his view that the only limitation is imagination and that jobs should be right not rushed.
The team can undertake any fabrication task and have various lathes, welding equipment, cutting equipment,
milling machines, metal folders and benders on-site. In addition, a full exhaust fabrication department
and a complete upholstery and trimming studio and there too.
